Automobiles | First Ford Car Buyer | On July 15, 1903, the newly formed Ford Motor Company takes its first order from Chicago dentist Ernst Pfenning: an $850 two-cylinder Model A automobile with a tonneau (or backseat). The car, produced at Ford’s plant on Mack Street (now Mack Avenue) in Detroit, was delivered to Dr. Pfenning just over a week later.
Ford gathered a group of 12 stockholders, including himself, to sign the papers necessary to form the Ford Motor Company in mid-June 1903. In an assembly room measuring 250 by 50 feet, the first Ford Model A went into production that summer. The Model A could accommodate two people side-by-side on a bench; it had no top and was painted red. The car’s biggest selling point was its engine, which at two cylinders and eight horsepower was the most powerful to be found in a passenger car. It had relatively simple controls, including two forward gears that the driver operated with a foot pedal, and could reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour. Within two months, the company had sold 215 Fords, and by the end of its first year the Mack Avenue plant had turned out some 1,000 cars. |

Business and Technology | Automobiles | 2022-05-19: An ultra-rare Mercedes-Benz race car, the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe, sold for $143 million earlier this month, making it the most expensive car ever sold.
The sale took place May 5 in a secretive and highly unusual auction at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany. The sale smashed the previous record for the most expensive car sold at auction by more than $95 million and topped the $70 million record for a car sold privately. The 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe is one of only two created in 1955 and is regarded as one of the most prized cars in auto history. It was built by Mercedes' race department and named after its chief engineer and designer, Rudolf Uhlenhaut. The Mercedes-Benz company owned both of the 300 SLR cars, and the May 5 sale took many collectors by surprise. Prior to the sale, the most expensive car sold at auction was a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO that went for $48.5 million at RM Sotheby's in 2018. A 1963 Ferrari GTO sold privately in 2018 for $70 million. |

Food and Drink | Coffee | 2022-06-01: Researchers found that individuals who drank 1.5 to 3.5 cups of coffee per day, even with a teaspoon of sugar, were up to 30 percent less likely to die during the study period than those who didn’t drink coffee.
Those who drank unsweetened coffee were 16 to 21 percent less likely to die during the study period, with those drinking about three cups per day having the lowest risk of death when compared with noncoffee drinkers. The data was inconclusive for those who drank coffee with artificial sweeteners. The average amount of added sugar per cup of sweetened coffee in the study was a little more than a teaspoon. A tall Caramel Macchiato at Starbucks contains 25 grams of sugar, about five times as much sugar as a sweetened cup of coffee from the study. Caffeinated beverages high in calories and fat potentially negate or at least blunt any benefit from the coffee itself. The study showed that the benefits of coffee tapered off for people who drank more than 4.5 cups of coffee each day. |

Business and Technology | VMware | 2022-09-13: The Securities and Exchange Commission today said it has charged the cloud computing giant VMware for “misleading investors about its order backlog management practices, which enabled the Palo Alto, Ca.-based technology company to push revenue into future quarters by delaying product deliveries to customers, concealing the company’s slowing performance relative to its projections.”
"VMware shifted tens of millions of dollars in revenue into future quarters, building a buffer in those periods and obscuring the company’s financial performance as its business slowed relative to projections in fiscal year 2020."
